• This article opens a series dedicated to the pleasure villas,the network of aristocratic residences that between the 16th and 18th centuries dotted the countryside of the State of Milan,from Brianza to the lakes. We owe the very name to the engraver Marc'Antonio Dal Re,who between 1726 and 1743 catalogued them one by one. We'll tell the story of this network the way it deserves: not a list of pretty houses,but the portrait of a way of life. Villa Della Porta Bozzolo is the first stop on our journey.

The name is misleading. "Delizia" — pleasure,delight — brings to mind a whim,an idle stay in the country. In reality it refers to one of the most refined social inventions of the early modern age. Pleasure villas were a type of out-of-town residence that took hold between the late Renaissance and the Baroque,especially popular from the sixteenth century onward among the aristocracy and urban elites. They arose from a mix of needs: escaping cities hit by epidemics,but also building a permanent stage for court life.

Unlike medieval castles,these residences had no defensive function,only a celebratory one. They were theatrical architecture,covered in frescoes and stuccowork,with Italian-style gardens that later gave way to French and English ones,nymphaeums and water theaters: one single,designed landscape. And yet — a detail almost everyone forgets — they also remained working farms. Beneath the magnificence there was always an estate generating income: wine,silk,oil,timber. Pleasure and labor coexisted within the same walls.

We owe the term to a single man. The engraver and architect Marc'Antonio Dal Re,a Bolognese transplanted to Milan,published between 1726 and 1743 the collection Ville di delizia,o siano palagi camparecci nello Stato di Milano,a compendium of bird's-eye views and floor plans of the major noble residences.

The canon of the pleasure villa was set precisely by those celebrated engravings,which documented more than a hundred residences and highlighted their value as more than just aesthetic — social and territorial too. Dal Re had planned six volumes. He completed far fewer,and his colossal project remained unfinished: even then,there were too many villas for one man and one printing press.

Casalzuigno doesn't appear in Dal Re's plates. It lay too far north,outside the heart of the Navigli canals and Brianza,where the fashion had first taken off. But it belongs fully to that same family of buildings,and today,paradoxically,it stands as one of its most intact examples.

The story begins in the sixteenth century with a notary. Located in the heart of the Valcuvia,Villa Della Porta Bozzolo was built in the sixteenth century by the notary Giroldino de Portu,founder of the Della Porta family line,as a country house with attached farm buildings. Not a palace,then,but a noble residence grafted onto a working farm. Concrete traces of that original core still survive: the Caminata,the old kitchen,and the old wine press,along with the memory of a cellar and a silkworm-reeling mill.

The wealth of the Della Porta family,originally from Porto Valtravaglia on Lake Maggiore and later settled in Milan,also passed through here: through the thread unwound from silk cocoons.

The leap in scale came in stages. In the second half of the seventeenth century the house was expanded with a Court of Honor and an elegant garden. But the real transformation,the one that secured the villa's place in art history,has a name and a date attached to it. In the eighteenth century the residence took on a new face thanks to Gian Angelo III Della Porta,who turned it into a refined villa for leisurely stays.

Behind the transformation lies a marriage. In 1714 Gian Angelo III married Isabella Giulini,daughter of a noble Milanese family,and it was likely that union that provided the means and the ambition to convert the country house into a magnificent pleasure villa,complete with a theatrical terraced garden. The model they looked to was illustrious and close by: the Borromeo garden on Isola Bella,on Lake Maggiore,one of the few villas Dal Re would go on to immortalize. Casalzuigno wanted that same magnificence,translated to the scale of a valley.

Did you know? The villa never stopped being a working farm. Even today FAI sells honey produced on the estate at the entrance: the palace built for festivities and the working farmland still,after three centuries,share the same gate.

Here we are at the heart of the matter,the choice that sets this villa apart from all the others. The eighteenth-century rule was ironclad: the axis of the garden had to align with the residence's main reception halls,so that from the ballroom the eye would run straight down between the flowerbeds,splitting the greenery into two symmetrical halves. The garden was the visual continuation of its owner's power.

At Casalzuigno,the opposite happened. In the eighteenth century,it was decided to set the garden's main axis parallel to the residence's inner facade,going against the rule that this axis should be aligned with the main halls of the villa. Local sources insist on the deliberate nature of the move: it was made in open defiance of the fashion of the time. The patron didn't want the garden in front of the house. He wanted it beside it,like a spectacle viewed in profile,one to be earned by walking rather than possessed in a single glance from the balcony.

The result is a scenic machine that climbs. Four theatrical terraces,linked by a staircase with balustrades,statues,and fountains,welcome the visitor,and the path culminates in the striking "Teatro," a lawn framed by a fishpond dating to 1723,with spectacular perspective effects stretching all the way to the Belvedere hill. You climb one step after another,and at each level the view lengthens,the valley opens up,the greenery grows wilder. This isn't a garden meant to be contemplated while seated. It's a garden meant to be walked through.

There's a lesson in this act of disobedience. The classical rule placed the house at the center and treated nature as a frame. Here the relationship is reversed: it's the landscape that sets the rhythm,and the architecture bends to follow it. That's why many historians consider the garden of Casalzuigno one of the most harmonious surviving works of landscape architecture in Italy.

Did you know? Who designed this act of transgression remains a small historical mystery. Several sources attribute the garden's design to Antonio Maria Porani,a painter and engineer already at work on the villa,while more cautious studies prefer not to name anyone. Either way,the idea of rotating the whole layout ninety degrees remains one of the boldest moves in Lombard Baroque garden design.

The highest point of the garden is called,fittingly,the "Teatro": a large lawn enclosed at the far end by the eighteenth-century fishpond,conceived as a green stage with the valley as its backdrop. For most of the year it's a quiet stretch of grass. Then March arrives.

In the autumn of 2003,to mark the tenth anniversary of Oasi Zegna,the Zegna Foundation planted half a million crocus bulbs,imported from Holland,in the lawn of the Teatro,under the direction of landscape architect Emilio Trabella. Ever since,every March,about a million and a half crocuses — yellow,purple,blue,white,and streaked — transform the villa's lawn into the largest crocus garden in the world,drawing visitors from all over Italy. For a few weeks the green stage lights up,and the theatrical gesture the Della Porta family imagined three centuries earlier finds,by chance,its perfect expression.

The bloom isn't the park's only secret. Right in front of the main facade lies the secret garden,more intimate and less elaborate,with a tree-lined avenue leading to a frescoed shrine dedicated to Apollo Musagetes. It's the flip side of the Teatro: where the great garden shouts,this one whispers. Those with time seek it out,sit in the shade of the oaks,and understand why Senator Bozzolo,centuries later,would call this place the refuge of his soul.

The garden makes a promise,and the interiors keep it. The rooms were frescoed between 1724 and 1726 and form one of the most sophisticated and cohesive decorative cycles of the eighteenth-century Lombard era. Working on the project were,among others,the Milanese painters Salvione and Bosso and the Varese-born Pietro Antonio Magatti,alongside craftsmen from Como and Ticino handling stuccowork,furnishings,and statues.

The register throughout is one of illusion. Walls,ceilings,and even the wooden doors are covered in fake architecture,painted niches,allegories,floral triumphs. You walk through a space pretending to be bigger and richer than it actually is,in a constant game of trompe l'oeil. The most celebrated moment is the long Gallery on the piano nobile,brought to life with mermaids,nymphs,tritons,and allegories of the virtues,painted within a dense play of false niches and architecture. From the Gallery's balcony,the view opens onto the monumental garden,and it's there that the design comes full circle: indoors and outdoors,painted fresco and actual perspective,become one and the same.

Many of the original furnishings have been lost over the centuries,but some survive as witnesses. There remain the eighteenth-century four-poster beds,including one in yellow silk damask,and the rich Library with more than two thousand volumes,including sixteenth-century editions of Bembo and Petrarch and the 1779 Encyclopédie.

Did you know? The Billiard Room preserves a rare example of biribissi,a gambling game very popular in the eighteenth century and considered by many the forerunner of roulette. Even so,betting,people found their fun in the pleasure villa.

Every villa changes with whoever lives in it,and Casalzuigno's last great chapter carries the name the villa has inherited today. After the Della Porta family died out in 1814,the estate changed hands several times,until in 1884 it was purchased by Senator Camillo Bozzolo. A doctor,researcher,and Garibaldian,he made Casalzuigno the refuge of his soul: it was here that he met his wife and spent long summers.

It's thanks to him that the library holds its medical volumes,gathered by a true scientist alongside the classics of the Renaissance. After his death the villa went through a slow decline,the fate of many houses too large for the twentieth century. Its revival has a precise date: donated to FAI by the Bozzolo heirs in 1989,the villa was restored and reopened to the public.

The restoration project was entrusted to architect Filippo Perego,with the stated goal of returning not a cold museum but the warmth of a family home. Visitors today walk through rooms that still feel lived in,and that's exactly the impression the project set out to achieve.

The villa is located on Viale Camillo Bozzolo,in Casalzuigno,in the province of Varese,nestled in the Valcuvia between Varese and Lake Maggiore. The season changes the experience. March is the month of the crocus bloom,the most spectacular time and also the most crowded. In April come the Camellia Days,among the most popular events at the estate. Autumn brings the foliage of the oaks and a low light perfect for the terraces. Those seeking quiet should do as the locals do: avoid peak weekends and aim for a weekday morning,when the Teatro is nearly deserted and the view toward the Belvedere can be enjoyed in silence.

A few practical details. The villa is open Wednesday through Sunday,from 10 AM to 6 PM,with last admission at 5 PM,and the visit takes about an hour,though between the park,the secret garden,and the I Rustici café on weekends it's easy to spend half a day there.
